Is Freebuff Legit? Should You Use It in 2026?

By Rida

Is Freebuff legit? Based on what we could verify, yes. It is a real product from a named company. It has a public GitHub repo, an npm package and published legal documents. We found no evidence of a scam.

But “legit” and “safe for your code” are different questions. Freebuff’s current privacy policy lets it analyze prompts to pick ads. Some models carry AI training labels. And the agent can run commands on your machine.

People search “is Freebuff legit” because the pitch sounds too good. Freebuff is a free tool that works as a Claude Code alternative, paid for by ads. Any free tool that reads your source code deserves some skepticism.

This article keeps apart what Freebuff claims, what we could check and what users report.

The Short Answer

QuestionShort answer
Is Freebuff a real product?Yes. Identifiable company, official site, public repo, npm package.
Is there evidence of a scam?None found. There are complaints about shrinking free limits.
Is Freebuff free?Core use is free and ad-supported, with daily limits and optional paid plans.
Is it safe for private or proprietary code? Not by default. Read the current policies first.

What Is Freebuff?

Freebuff is a free, ad-supported AI coding agent. The official GitHub README lists five products:

  • Freebuff Desktop: parallel agents on your machine
  • Freebuff CLI: a terminal agent
  • Freebuff Web: a full-stack app builder
  • Freebuff Cloud: agents that work on GitHub repos
  • Freebuff Chat: research and Q&A

The CLI is the original product. You install it with npm, run freebuff inside a project and describe what you want.

The README says Freebuff runs on Codebuff, the company’s multi-agent framework. Instead of one single agent doing everything, multiple agents split the work. They find files, plan, edit, run tools and check the results.

Freebuff does not use one model. Its model list changes often and has included MiMo 2.6 Flash, GLM 5.3 Flash and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Others, such as Gemini 3.8 Flash and Muse Spark 1.3, need a paid plan. Treat any model list as a snapshot.

Is Freebuff Legit? The Evidence

Trust comes from several signals that are hard to fake together. Here is what we checked.

SignalWhat we foundCaveat
Identifiable operatorFreebuff’s Terms of Service name Freebuff, Inc., list a support email and set Delaware law with San Francisco courts.Standard legal boilerplate, not proof of quality.
Startup recordY Combinator lists Freebuff (Fall 2024) with founder James Grugett, who previously founded Manifold Markets. The profile is written by the company.

Release activityThe company publishes tagged binary releases for Linux, macOS and Windows.Activity shows life, not safety.
Legal documentsDetailed Privacy Policy and Terms, last updated October 1, 2026.Detail does not mean the terms are friendly.

Scam operations usually hide who runs them. They offer no code to inspect and push users toward payment or login details. Freebuff does the opposite. It has a named company, public code, a package you can inspect and legal documents that openly describe uncomfortable details.

Some gaps remain. The backend is not public. Greenlit Books found no published security advisories, no bug bounty and no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 report. Security issues go to an email address. A real company is not always a well-protected one.

Is Freebuff a Scam?

is freebuff safe

We found no evidence that Freebuff is a scam. It does not ask for payment to start. There is no sign of a fake product. Independent reviewers describe a tool that installs and works. LinkLoot’s review says the project looks real, but it is labeled an automated assessment, so weigh it with care.

Several concerns exist. None of them make Freebuff a scam.

  • The free allowance has changed. Issue titles on the Freebuff GitHub issue tracker in early September included “So FreeBuff is not free anymore ????” and a call to pause usage until Freebucks pricing was restored. Freebuff’s Terms say it may change usage limits and model access at any time.
  • Messaging does not always match the policies. The CLI page says “No accounts to create.” The Terms and Privacy Policy describe a free account, device checks and possible ID checks. Greenlit Books noted the same mismatch.
  • One reviewer makes serious claims. A long negative review on SourceForge accuses Freebuff of misleading marketing and platform policy violations. We could not verify these claims, so we do not treat them as fact. They are still worth knowing about.

A company can be real and still change its free tier or market itself aggressively. Those are reasons to watch the terms. They are not proof of fraud.

Is Freebuff Safe to Use?

Safety covers privacy, security and data handling. This section relies on the current privacy policy and terms, which can change.

What the Privacy Policy says

  • What it collects: prompts, messages, code, files, repo data, images, agent activity and tool traces. It also collects account, device and usage data.
  • Advertising: Freebuff may use prompts and messages to personalize ads and infer general interests. Code you paste into a prompt counts as part of that message. The policy says uploaded files and connected repo contents are not given to ad providers. It also says ads are not targeted using sensitive traits such as health or religion.
  • Data for AI training: the policy says prompts and project data are not used to train models unless Freebuff says so before you use a model or feature. A “May use data for AI training” label means your input can be kept and used for training. It may not be removable later. The README says the Space Bunny Alpha model comes from an anonymous provider that keeps prompts. Greenlit Books found training labels on two other models. Read the label in the model picker every time.
  • Retention: there is no fixed period. Deleted data can remain in backups, combined data and data already used for training.
  • Codebase Evaluation: if you connect a GitHub repo to Freebuff Cloud, you allow a review of it for its “technical or commercial value.” Automated tools and sometimes people, including vetted partners, do the review. The policy says this does not allow AI training. Disconnecting GitHub does not by itself delete data already collected.
  • Identity and device checks: Freebuff allows one free account per person. To enforce that, it uses device fingerprinting. It may also ask for an ID check through a provider that handles a government ID photo and a selfie, including biometric data.

Security considerations

The Terms warn that AI output may be wrong or insecure. They also say the agent may run commands, delete or corrupt data, or be tricked by malicious repo content (prompt injection). They advise you to keep backups and watch what the agent does.

Greenlit Books found no documented approval setting or sandbox for the main agent. Freebuff’s own FAQ suggests running it in a container.

Some points favor Freebuff. Greenlit reports that the npm package runs no install scripts and that the launcher checks a checksum when it downloads the binary. Ignored files are also not read by default.

Practical advice

  1. Never put secrets in prompts or in files the agent can read. That includes passwords, private keys, an API key or access tokens. Freebuff’s own policy asks users to avoid them. Keep .env files out of reach with .gitignore or .codebuffignore.
  2. Start with a throwaway project. Test on non-sensitive code first.
  3. Isolate it. A container, a VM or a copy of the project limits the damage from a bad command.
  4. Review every change. Treat the output like a code review. Check git diff, generated commands and new dependencies before you commit.
  5. Check the model label. Training and retention rules differ by model.
  6. Think twice before connecting private repos to Freebuff Cloud.

Is Freebuff Free to Use?

Freebuff costs no money to start. You pay with attention (text ads), some data processing and usage limits. It is a free tool with conditions.

  • Daily allowance: Freebuff’s home page describes a daily budget of “Freebucks” that you spend across models. At the time of writing it listed 150 Freebucks per day. They refill at midnight Pacific, with no carryover. The README and home page disagree on which models are unmetered, so check the current numbers.
  • Region and VPN: access depends on your country. The README says limited mode applies outside full-access regions and on VPNs, with a smaller daily allowance.
  • Paid plans: the Terms say Freebuff may offer subscriptions that add session capacity on top of the free tier. We found no plan prices in the official documents we reviewed, so we list none.
  • Conditions: the Terms allow one free account per person. A human must start and stay present for sessions. Scripts and CI use of the free tier are banned, and so is hiding your location to gain access.
  • Ads: Greenlit Books reports that text ads appear between agent turns. Per design notes in the public mirror, you cannot turn them off in the CLI.

How Does Freebuff Make Money?

The disclosed model has three parts. The FAQ says text ads support the service. The Terms describe paid subscriptions. The site also links to an enterprise page. Greenlit Books says it offers custom retention terms, including zero retention.

Freebuff does not disclose revenue, margins or whether free usage is profitable. Its LinkedIn page says the company is profitable, but that is a self-reported claim we could not verify. We will not guess beyond that.

What Do Users Say About Freebuff?

Most feedback is personal opinion, and the sample we could reach is small. The SourceForge listing, for example, had only two reviews, averaging 3.0 out of 5.

Positive reports

  • A SourceForge reviewer (October 2026) says they use it daily and like the speed, price and model choice.
  • A DEV Community write-up praises Freebuff as a code reviewer on a Laravel backend. It was tested around June.

Negative reports

  • The same author found the generated code weak on a complex backend. It missed database transactions and had slow loops. That is one developer, one project and an older model setup.
  • A different SourceForge reviewer (September 2026) complains about reduced free usage, quality, reliability and privacy terms.
  • LinkLoot noted open GitHub issues about launch, CPU and terminal interface problems.

Repeated themes: free limits keep changing, ad-profiling terms are broader than many developers expect, and quality depends heavily on the model and task.

Be careful with quotes and videos on Freebuff’s own site, since the company picks them. Be careful with older reviews too. Several, including one at VibeCodingHub, repeat early claims such as “we don’t store your codebase.” The current policy is more complex.

A Reddit thread in r/vibecoding ranks well for this search. We could not review its comments, so we draw no conclusions from it.

Freebuff vs Claude Code

Both are terminal-based coding agents that read, edit and run code in your projects. They differ most on price, models and data terms.

Privacy considerationsAds can use prompts, some models carry training labels, no fixed retention periodConsumer plans have a model-improvement setting, with retention that varies by choice. See Anthropic’s data usage page
Enterprise controlsCustom terms available via enterprise offeringZero data retention available on Enterprise, per Anthropic’s docs
Usage limitsDaily Freebucks, region dependentPlan based limits
Best forLearning, side projects, experimentationPaid, predictable use with vendor data terms

Neither is a clear winner. Freebuff suits developers who want $0 and a wide model list and can accept the trade-offs. Claude Code suits people who want one vendor, one set of data terms and steady access, and who will pay for it. Our best LLM for coding comparison covers the model side. Our AI coding experience article covers using these tools on real projects.

Pros and Cons of Freebuff

ProsCons
Real, identifiable company with public codeBackend is not public, and the repo is a mirror of a private one
Free core use with no card requiredFree limits have changed and may change again
Multiple models, with data labels shown before usePrompts can feed ad selection
Installs through npm with no install scriptsSome models carry AI training or retention notices
Terms openly warn about command executionNo documented sandbox for the main agent found
Several products: CLI, desktop, web, cloudNo SOC 2 or ISO report found

Who Should Use Freebuff?

  • Students and learners who cannot afford a paid agent and work on non-sensitive projects.
  • Hobby developers building side projects or open-source code.
  • Developers experimenting with coding agents before paying for one.
  • Cost-sensitive developers who accept ads and limits.

Who Should Be More Careful With Freebuff?

  • Companies and teams with privacy or compliance duties.
  • Developers who handle private or client code under NDA.
  • Anyone with sensitive repos, secrets in the project folder or regulated data.
  • Organizations with strict security needs, which should look at paid or enterprise terms instead.

Whoever you are, read the current privacy policy and terms before you connect an important repo. They have changed several times recently.

Final Verdict: Is Freebuff Legit?

Is Freebuff legit? Yes, as a product. It has a named operator, public source code, a package you can inspect, active development and detailed legal documents. We found no evidence of a scam.

Should everyone trust it with their code? No. Prompts can be used to pick ads. Some models may train on your data. Retention has no fixed limit. The free tier keeps shifting. And the agent can run commands without a documented sandbox. These are trade-offs of a free, ad-funded agent. They are not signs of fraud.

Use it freely on code you would be happy to share with an ad-funded service, ideally in an isolated setup. For sensitive or private work, pay for a tool whose data terms fit your duties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Freebuff legit?

Yes, based on the evidence we reviewed. It has a named operator (Freebuff, Inc.), an official website, a public GitHub repo, an npm package and published policies. Legit does not mean risk free.

Is Freebuff safe?

It depends on what you give it. The agent can run commands, prompts may be analyzed for ads, and some models carry AI training labels. Keep secrets and sensitive code out, and use an isolated setup.

Is Freebuff a scam?

We found no evidence of a scam. The concerns we found involve changing free limits, privacy terms and some messaging mismatches.

Is Freebuff free?

Core use is free and paid for by text ads. Daily limits vary by model and region. Freebuff also sells paid plans that add capacity.

How does Freebuff work?

You install it with npm, or use the desktop, web or cloud versions. Open a project and describe a task. Specialized agents find files, make edits, run tools and review the results, using models from Freebuff’s catalog.

Can Freebuff access my code?

Yes, that is how it works. It reads project files and can run commands. Ignored files are not read by default, but keep secrets out of the project anyway.

Does Freebuff use my data to train AI?

Freebuff’s policy says no, unless a model or feature is clearly labeled for AI training before you use it. Check the label in the model picker, because some models carry it.

Is Freebuff better than Claude Code?

Neither is better for everyone. Freebuff wins on price. Claude Code offers a single vendor and its own data terms. See the comparison table above.
